The Institute for Transport Studies (ITS) is a free-standing academic department of the University of Leeds and part of the Faculty of Environment, and one of the world’s largest academic centres for transport research. The Institute’s primary purpose is to advance the understanding of transport activity, operations and use, and to develop skills and best practice among transport professionals and decision-makers. ITS is particularly notable for the breadth and depth of research, the international quality of which has been verified by Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) stretching back over a period of 20 years.
It has a staff of 40 with a reputation for research of ‘internationally recognised’ quality and originality, significance and rigor. The Institute’s training and staff development policies have helped it become the first academic unit in the UK to receive ISO9001 status for research management (1995). ITS has led a number of projects on the safety assessment of new transport technologies, including HASTE, AIDE, CityMobil, ITERATE, euroFOT, ecoDriver and UDRIVE. In terms of systems to enhance safety, it has pioneered research on intelligent speed adaptation (ISA), in both European and national projects.
